Network Engineer

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

 

This position requires the incumbent to demonstrate expertise for providing WAN and voice management support for the network. The incumbent will share call-out responsibilities with other team members and be able to support all aspects required of the network support team.  General duties include planning, installing and supporting networks and peripherals.  Additionally, the incumbent will be required to provide project management support for changes and coordinate activities with the FSG customer and required vendors. 

 

·  Provide technical support for the FSG network, including troubleshooting.

·  Provide technical solutions for ATM/IP voice and data network Service Requests.

·  Provide technical support for Oracle and the voice data analysis planning system.

·  Documentation of the ATM/IP voice and data network.

·  Documentation of Oracle and the voice data analysis planning system.

·  Implement changes in the network using established change procedures.

·  Provide 7x24 support as required via pager for the network

·  Backup to other team members as required.

·  Some travel required for installations and customer meetings.

·  Maintain technology currency through lab testing, reading, research and training.

·  Provide proposal and budgeting input.

·  Prepare and present technical presentations to upper level management, including outside customer.

 REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE (6-8 Years Experience in Each) 

·  General knowledge of telecommunications technologies including: Optical Networking (SONET, DWDM), MPLS, ATM, Frame-Relay, TDM, and LAN technologies, and the inter-working of these technologies.  These would encompass voice and voice-over technologies, data, broadband, and Internet services, and the deployment and implementation of these services on a national scale.

·  Strong knowledge and experience with the Internet Protocol (IP) suite is essential, including protocols such as BGP, ISIS, OSPF and EIGRP, and their relationships and integrations in medium-scale to large-scale networks.

·  Specific knowledge and experience with the design of voice-over technology and WAN protocol implementation, and the methods to integrate these technologies while delivering the quality of service customers will expect.

·  General understanding of network management environments and the operating systems and applications used to support them, including UNIX and Intel based systems, HP products, Micromuse products, Cisco products, RMON products, Concorde products and ticketing systems.  This would include a general background with application development models and hierarchal database structures such as Oracle, Informix, or DB2.

·  Development and implementation experience with web-based application development tools such as PHP and Java, as well as object oriented development tools such as C++ and Visual Basic.  Development experience with Oracle PL-SQL and database administration would be an asset.

·  General understanding of the overall industry direction with regard to telecommunication technologies and the applications they will support. 

·  Strong oral and written communication skills are necessary.  Must be able to effectively present technology to internal technical and some management personnel, as well as limited customer personnel.

·  Must be an effective escalation point for the troubleshooting of intermediate to complex customer problems.  Must be sensitive to the customer needs while balancing Verizon resources and objectives.

·  Must be able to document solutions and the analysis of technical problems and effectively communicate this information to senior technical personnel and management.  May be required to discuss this information with customer personnel, including customer management.

·  Provide mentoring and training to lower level personnel in both the technical arena and to some degree in oral and written communication skills.

·  Assist management and senior technical personnel with recommendations for the allocation of technical resources for projects and other initiatives. DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
