RECREATION SUPERINTENDENT

THE POSITION
The incumbent in this class reports to the Community Services Department Director, and is responsible for all day-to-day activities involved in the operational activities and achievement of strategic objectives of the Department. In addition, the Superintendent may serve as Acting Director in the absence of the Director. The Recreation Superintendent is a member of the Management Group. The Recreation Superintendent will work closely with the Director and staff to improve the array of recreation and community service opportunities
DUTIES
< Coordinate recreation programs and services
< Supervise full and part-time recreation and contractual staff
< Work with neighborhood council coordinators to improve resident’s awareness of program and services by increasing marketing through community/neighborhood outreach
< Continue focusing on the well being of youth and seniors by expanding and enhancing programs and services; and improve program accessibility to all citizens by considering service delivery issues such as location, fees, disabilities and demographics
< Work on grants and outside funding opportunities, which could additionally enhance recreational opportunities
< Oversee the Department in the absence of the Director.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Training and Experience – Any combination of equivalent training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be: Bachelors Degree in a related field, and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in community services, recreation, leisure studies, fine or performing arts or a related field, including two (2) of those five years working as a supervisor.
2. Knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) – The principles and practices of municipal recreation administration and supervision, fiscal procedures, community recreation programs and organizations, grant writing and alternative funding sources and the management and evaluation of recreational activities.
3. Ability to - Understand community leisure and social conditions to determine special recreation needs; perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others; communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one or group setting; comprehend and make inferences from written material; produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar; work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public including groups of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
4. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required at the time of appointment
SELECTION PROCESS

2. Complete and submit a City application, which may be downloaded at www.ci.national-city.ca.us with attached copies of documents verifying the above documents.
Applications will be reviewed and those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the requirements of the position will be invited to participate in an oral interview. The interview panel will evaluate each candidate’s relevant education, training and experience. Names of those receiving a passing score (70% or above) will be placed on an eligibility list for one (1) year. Selection to a vacant position will be made from the top five (5) candidates ranked highest on the list.
On conditional job offer to a career position, the applicant will be required to take a medical examination at the City’s expense. In addition, the applicant is required to be fingerprinted as a condition of employment.
