Summary

The Center for Excellence in Genomic Science has been established to perform a large scale screen to identify genes by their specific cellular and subcellular distribution in the zebrafish embryo www.cegs.caltech.edu.
Working in a team environment, the senior research technician position will perform traditional molecular biology techniques.


Job Duties

*Designs plasmids using molecular biology software and constructs plasmids using standard molecular cloning techniques.

*Clones insertions from our zebrafish lines using 3'RACE and other PCR based techniques.

*Identifies genes using BLAST searches and add this information to our database.

*Organizes and conducts complex lab procedures and/or experiments which includes setting up equipment, recording observations, analyzing and interpreting results, and performing and/or suggesting modifications to experiments and/or protocols

*Collaborates with researchers on resolving a variety of technical problems surrounding molecular analysis of zebrafish embryos and optimizing molecular protocols

*Conducts literature research; recommends and contributes scientific information to research reports, journals and/or articles; may present research work at seminars and participate in lab discussions

*Coordinates the ordering, processing, restocking of lab supplies, equipment, animals and maintains general organization of lab

*Other duties as assigned


Minimum Requirements

A BS degree in the Life Sciences or equivalent with 4 to 6 years of relevant work experience in molecular biology. Candidates with MS degree in the Life Sciences with previous laboratory experience will be given preference.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The candidate must have expert knowledge of molecular biology techniques (cloning, PCR, RNA extraction, gels). Strong written and oral communication skills. Solid organizational and analytical skills. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively under minimal supervision and within a team environment.
