Sr. Optical Scientist

CYMER Inc. The world leader in Excimer Lasers for the semiconductor industry is actively seeking to add some very special individuals to our R&D team. Located in North San Diego County, our state of the art award winning facilities designed by the world famous Syska Hennessey Group is minutes away from some of the finest schools and shopping areas in San Diego.
Our Senior Optical Scientist position is seeking someone with the following skills and qualifications:
Responsible for proposing new optical concepts and technologies for excimer lithography lasers and associated optical metrology, conducting simulation and experimental research to validate approved proposals. Position assumes considerable independence in defining experimental methods and procedures.
Initiates the design, development, execution and implementation of research projects for improving optical performance and metrology of excimer lasers.
Investigates the feasibility of applying new concepts to potential inventions and products.
Plans and executes laboratory research.
Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences.
Contributes to company’s intellectual property portfolio via invention disclosures.
Leads or participates in a small interdisciplinary teams of technologists pursuing defined technical ends.
Participates in short-term team efforts to review and improve manufacturing assembly and test process for optics modules.


QUALIFICATIONS
Strong experimental background with experience understanding and characterizing systematic errors in measurements.
High level of technical creativity.
Optical engineering principles.
Experience using Optical Design Software (Oslo, Zemax, Code 5, etc.)
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work either independently or as part of a development team, including as technical leader of such a team.
Self-motivation and ability to work in a fast-moving high-tech environment.
Occasional travel within and outside the US may be required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Ph.D in Physics, Optics, or related Engineering discipline
5 to 10 years research experience in Lasers, Optics or related fields.
Experience with Semiconductor Capital Equipment preferred
Experience with Excimer Lasers desired.
Experienc in three areas will command particular attention:
Design/analysis of complex optical systems: system raytrace, tolerance analysis, thermal modeling is desirable.
Precision optical measurements (high resolution spectroscopy, time-frequency standards, novel spectroscopic methods, interferometry.
Development of UV solid-state lasers
