Job Description

REQUIREMENTS:

* M.S. or B.S. degree in Animal Science or related field

* Previous experience in Animal Husbandry, Health and Welfare facility Administration and Management, Research and Compliance are required

* AALAS LATG Certification required

* AALAS CMAR Certification required

* 5 years minimum and 10 years preferred, supervisory experience in GLP pharmaceutical Research and Development animal facility preferred

* Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are required

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Inspires, motivates, instructs and supervise employees to provide optimal animal care

* Continually reviews and evaluates the staff, their processes and the facility to ensure complete compliance with AAALAC, USDA, FDA, and BI standards for animal care, housekeeping and safety; keeps abreast of new regulations, developments and trends in animal care

* Continually monitors facility environmental parameters (temperature, relative humidity, ventilation, photoperiod, condition of surfaces, function of equipment, etc) and coordinates corrective/restorative actions with the appropriate departments

* Identifies, communicates with and evaluates appropriate resources (vendors) of research animals and supplies in coordination with investigators at BI R&D; maintains in-house animals from said suppliers as needed by investigators

* Identifies, maintains and reviews the status (accuracy and completion) of all records of animal procurement, care and use; employees supervised, supply inventory, and facility maintenance, etc. as required by federal law, accreditation standards, and BI policy. Maintains written standard operating procedures associated with facility maintenance and animal husbandry procedures

* Assists in the development of planned facility renovation and design

* Coordinates and communicates with the Animal Resource veterinarians concerning animal health concerns, including animal and equipment vendor selection; vivarium space allocation, diet and bedding procurement, environmental parameter establishment, use of detergents and sanitizers, preventive medicine scheduling, facility improvements and renovations

* Assists in the development of a realistic annual budget for the operation and maintenance of the facility

* Provides for any special handling of animals as required by research staff

* Administer or complete other animal care related duties as authorized by the supervisor
