Metallurgical Engineer

This position manages and co-ordinates the daily activities of the personnel engaged in performing metallurgical testing required for the quality control of powder approval and finished sintered products produced in the Compacts, Wear Parts and Round Tool groups. This position works in concert with manufacturing and Research and Development under the site Quality Management umbrella to improve, trouble-shoot and maintain current and future customer requirements. Characteristics required by the potential applicant at a minimum include: Knowledge of physical metallurgical testing and related equipment usage and maintenance. Must be capable of effectively working and communicating with all levels of personnel both within the company and externally with customers. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from various levels of personnel from executive management, customers and the general public. Be proficient in writing reports, business correspondence, and the preparation of budgets and strategic planning. Ability to apply mathematical concepts and operations to various tasks as variance analysis, correlation techniques, sampling theory, determination of test reliability and validity, etc. Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions while interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form. Recommend measures to improve production methods and equipment performance to reduce lead times, scrap and rework. Reviews product failure and interprets laboratory tests/analysis to establish or rule out material and/or process causes. Confers with scientists or engineers to conduct analysis, interpret test results, or develop nonstandard tests. Conduct research to develop custom products and investigates complaints on existing products.

Experience and Skills:
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering with preferred 3-5 years in the carbide industry or related manufacturing field. Additionally must be able to plan and execute projects and complete short-term work assignment independently, with periodic technical direction from higher-level engineers or managers. Problem Solving / Decision Making an asset. Project Management experience and/or training, as well as ACCESS/MINITAB or other statistical software. Any experience in Lean Manufacturing would be an asset.
