The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing and promoting the maintenance of an accident free, safe, and healthy work environment, and conduct all aspects of loss prevention and control programs by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors:

 

Responsibilities:

1.  Makes studies and analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards for use by company personnel and outside agencies.

2.  Formulates general safety policies and procedures to be followed by company or plant personnel in compliance with local, state, and federal safety laws to facilitate the principles of safe working conditions.

3.  Consults with all departments on design and use of equipment, shops, fire prevention and safety programs.

4.  Inspects or tours organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, and recommends corrective or preventive measures where indicated.

5.  Keeps managers and employees alerted as to the hazards of working with toxic fumes,  dangerous chemicals, and any other hazardous substances.

6.  Participates in the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, law suits, and insurance investigations.

7.  Compiles and submits reports required by regulatory agencies.

8.  Oversees the administration of workers' compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier to reduce lost time injuries and elevation of fraudulent claims.

9.  Devises, supervises, and coordinates training programs or media which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety awareness.

10.  Prepares and arranges safety exhibits and material for display, promotional work for industry conferences and exhibitions.

11.  Oversees the administration of loss prevention and control programs and works with insurance carrier in the facilitation of such program.

12.  Purchases or recommends purchases of safety items including personal protective equipment as well as environmental and

 engineering controls and maintains the budget requirements of the safety department.

13.  Conducts and directs disciplinary actions for violations of company safety policies or procedures.

14.  Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.

15.  Maintains safety files, documentation, and records.

 

Requirements:

 

1. Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

3. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

4. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

5. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

6. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

7. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

8.   Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
