Sr. Build Services System Administrator

Description: The goal of this position is to perform 100% of the onsite work related to maintaining and building out production, QA, and IT systems for eBay and PayPal, as well as the remote access infrastructure. This person will spend 50% of their time in our data centers. This position will have three equally important functions.
1.) They will maintain all hardware systems supported and administered by the SA organization.
2.) Responsible for imaging and handing off servers as required by the SA organization.
3.) Responsible for maintaining all tools and documentation necessary for remotely administering all SA supported systems.

Identify and repair any piece of hardware the SA organization supports. The onsite person will be responsible for visually inspecting systems and using any tools provided by the SA organization for identifying and tracking failed hardware. Service calls will be placed the day a failure is noticed and then tracked to resolution with the hardware vendor. This person will also act as the point of contact with vendors for all hardware maintenance matters. A log should be kept to allow identification of reoccurring problems and hardware "out for repair".

The imaging and handing off of systems will include placing a standard image on a system and successfully bringing it up on the network to the point where it can be reached and administered remotely. When handed off, the SA organization at corporate should be able to log on via PCA or terminal services, DSView and remotely power-cycle the system regardless of OS state such as thru a Cyclades port, IBM RSA card or APC power strip.

This position will also be responsible for accurately documenting everything related to the physical site. The SA organization should have at their disposal any documentation and tools needed to find and administer a box that is in any state short of hardware failure.

This person needs to learn and master:
1. Any hardware platform eBay chooses to place its front or back end. The front end infrastructure is currently comprised of IBM Blades, x33* Series (NT and Linux), and Rackables (Linux). The backend is currently comprised of Sun 120's, 220's 240's, 280's, 420's, 440's, 480's, 490's, 880's, 1280's, and 2900's.
2. OpForce, IBM RSA technology, remote tools and anything that replaces it.
3. DSView technology, NetRanger.
4. IBM Director Technologies as it pertains to asset tracking and hardware maintenance.
5. Ghost multicasting or any technology that replaces our current imaging solution.
6. Near and far end troubleshooting skills to accurately diagnose problems.
7. Any technology relating to the necessary documentation requirement

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will posses all the skills required to administrate UNIX, Linux, and NT/Windows systems for the Build Services team. Responsibilities are to include systems administration and troubleshooting in a large and highly dynamic environment. Person will be responsible for maintaining current hardware infrastructure while also building out new hardware for projects.

o Must have basic understanding of Microsoft Windows operating systems including NT4, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003.
o Knowledge of Ghost imaging, basic TCP/IP functionality, and networking a must.
o Applicant will be expected to perform basic UNIX builds such as Solaris 8.0 and 10.0, Linux RedHat 6.2, 7.0, Cyclades (console servers), APC IP based remote manageable power strips.
o Must be extremely self motivated and have the ability to foresee upcoming events to minimize any downtime.
o Must have strong communication skills and ability to work individually, within a team, and with other groups at all technical levels.
o Knowledge of Sun, IBM, Rackables, F5, Netscaler, and Cisco hardware is essential.
o Knowledge of ticketing systems (Remedy based) a plus.
o Knowledge of Remote administration systems (OpForce, others) a plus.
