Military Counselor

GENERAL SUMMARY: Performs administrative and analytical tasks in support of a contract program; works under general supervision; performs additional duties as assigned. PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Prevention & Education Specialist develops and delivers both unit and command level presentation/briefs on various prevention topics. Provides general educational services with the purpose of enhancing life skills and reducing the impact of stress associated with a mobile military life style. Provides statistical data to the program manager and assists with setting up and dismantling training rooms, conference rooms, offices, etc. LIFE SKILLS EDUCATION tasks include planning, developing, delivering and evaluating programs to assist individuals, couples and families to develop the coping and relationship skills needed to be successful at work and at home, and to identify and change behaviors that have undesirable consequences. Life skills programs will include but are not limited to the subjects of parenting, stress management, anger management, conflict resolution, couples communication, and suicide prevention. Programs may be offered as single or multi-session classes and scheduled by M&FS for all comers or targeted groups; or they may be delivered at the request of commands, family support groups or other installation support activities. Tasks/Duties: - Develop and deliver both unit and command level presentation/briefs on various prevention topics, i.e., child abuse, child sexual abuse, spouse abuse, stress management and suicide. - Develop and implement a comprehensive education program for family members in the dynamics of spouse and child abuse and the availability of treatment services and the Marine Corps policies regarding family violence. - Develop and provide education for professionals and paraprofessionals who work with children, e.g., Child Development Centers, Youth Activities Schools and Law Enforcement, to ensure awareness of the seriousness of child abuse, the causes and effects of child abuse, the identification and reporting responsibilities. - Provide training on child abuse, child sexual abuse and mandatory reporting requirements to on-base child care providers. - Develop, coordinate and provide program education designed to enhance parenting and child management skills. - Provide outreach programs to promote community awareness of child abuse and spouse abuse. - Provide general educational services with the purpose of enhancing life skills and reducing the impact of stress associated with a mobile military life style. - Provide statistical data to the CS program manager. - Continue to develop the Prevention and Support programs. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PES¿s shall possess a Bachelors Degree in social work, education, psychology or social science and two years experience in social or mental health related services. A minimum of one year of this experience must be child abuse and neglect, family violence and spouse abuse is highly desired. Must have demonstrated experience in outreach, community organization and development within the last five years. In addition to the two years minimum experience in social or mental health related services, three years of experience in the specific areas of child abuse and neglect, rape/sexual assault, family violence or suicide awareness may be substituted for the degree requirement. TRAVEL: limited - selected conferences, meetings SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to lift and carry heavy items up to 50 pounds without assistance when setting up training facilities or transporting equipment for briefs. 1. Demonstrated effective organizational skills; 2. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and other related software applications; 3. Effective communication skills; 4. Knowledge of program requirements. WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is typically performed in an office environment, which requires normal safety precautions; work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes or equipment.
