REGISTERED NURSE, SURGERY 8HR/DAYS

Summary: Maintains standards for professional nursing practice and specialty perioperative nursing practice in the clinical setting. Participates in the coverage of the departmental ?On Call? schedule as well as shift adjustments based on the needs of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Individual Performance

1. Meets annual competency requirement prior to evaluation date.
2. Demonstrates knowledge of, and utilizes A.O.R.N. Standards of Practice at all times, in daily peri-operative practice.
3. Assesses patient needs and condition upon admission to the Pre-operative Holding area.
4. Develops and documents plan of nursing care based upon assessment data. Involves other disciplines in planning.
5. Functions as a scrub nurse or circulating nurse during the intra-operative phase.
6. Utilizes physician preference lists and nursing care plans in preparation for specific operative procedures.
7. Demonstrates safe practice and knowledge of safety principles for the following:
7.1. Electro-surgical safety
7.2. Laser safety
7.3. Radiation safety
7.4. Basic Asepsis
7.5. Universal Blood and Fluid Precautions
7.6. OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Standard
7.7. Safe Medical Devices Act
7.8. Medical Device Tracking Procedure
7.9. Code Blue Protocol - adult and pediatric
7.10. Malignant Hyperthermia
7.11. Fire in the Operating Room
7.12. OR Disaster Procedure
8. Demonstrates knowledge of safe principles of positioning patients intra-operatively.
9. Maintains accurate count of sponges and needles strictly observing departmental policy and procedures.
10. Administers medications and monitors local anesthetic patients according to policies and procedures.
11. Uses safe methods of identification, handling, and disposition of patient specimens according to established department policies and procedures.
12. Documents intra-operative care provided.
13. Uses supplies and sutures judiciously and exercises cost-conscious judgment when preparing for procedures.
14. Demonstrates knowledge of principles of aseptic technique and sterilization. Demonstrates competence in operation of the following:
14.1. Decontamination unit
14.2. Steam autoclave
14.3. Chemical sterilization (Steris unit)
14.4. Demonstrates knowledge of correct procedure for testing and documenting of results for sterilization equipment.
15. Demonstrates knowledge of the cleaning, care, handling, and sterilization of all types of surgical instruments.
15.1. Utilizes resources and resource material as appropriate.
16. Evaluates patient?s immediate response to the care plan and surgical intervention in the Post- Anesthesia Care Unit.

Experience:
Mininum of 1 year experience in O.R. nursing
Education:
Minimum education as required for Licensure
Specialized Training:
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Provider

Current California license as a Registered Nurse
