Patient Access Representative - Bed Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY

Coordinates hospital bed reservations from physician offices, medical groups, hospital emergency department, and short stay/ambulatory services for same day and future requests. Responsibilities include ensuring that beds are obtained and communicated to requester on a timely basis, financial information is obtained and cleared for admission, and clinical crieria is met in conjuciton with the pre-admission nurse/case manager.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

1. High school diploma or GED equivalent

2. CPR certification, preferred

3. Course in Medical Terminology or completion of SVMC Medical Terminology course, prior to start date

4. Must pass the core competency test within first 90 days of employment. Failure to do so will require transfer to other postion without such requirement or termination of employment within 30 days of test results

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

2 years in healthcare

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE PREFERRED

2 years in hospital-based registration or billing

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordinates incoming calls for same day and future admissions bed reservations

2. Works closely with the case management pre-admission nurse for admit approval and bed assignment

3. Receives bed request calls from physician offices, Short Stay, PACU, and ER in addition to requests for bed transfers

4. Monitors the physician suspension list and request an alternate admitting physician as appropriate

5. In support of the Patient Access Department, is responsible for establishing the visit for all patient types and for assigning a medical record number when appropriate. This is the first step in the billing process, so accurancy and thoroughness are critical for compliance, excellent customer service and fiscal health

6. Collects accurate demographic and financial information under strict confidentiality in compliance with EMTALA, HIPAA, and all applicable regulations
