Clinical Veterinarian

The University of Southern California’s Department of Animal Resources seeks an excellent Clinical Veterinarian to assist the Director of the department in supporting research programs involving a diverse animal population including both small and large laboratory animals.
Duties will include: providing clinical, diagnostic, and surgical care to animals; managing preventive medical programs including rodent health surveillance, quarantine, and diagnostic laboratory activities; participating in IACUC activities including investigator interactions, protocol review, inspections, and post-approval monitoring; and participating in resident-training in an ACLAM-approved training program.
This veterinarian will: ensure that animals are provided care in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations in order to promote physical and psychological well-being and minimize discomfort; ensure compliance with departmental and university policies and procedures; supervise unit employees, as assigned; and assist in recruiting, screening, hiring, orientating and training unit staff. The veterinarian will assist the Director in providing Principal Investigators and other research personnel with guidelines, consultation, and training on the choice and use of anesthetics, analgesics, tranquilizers, medication, surgical procedures, post-surgical care, euthanasia, and other procedures relating to animal research.
Minimum Qualifications:
DVM degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited school, veterinary medical license for at least one state, and 3 years of veterinary experience in a clinical or research setting. Applicants must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and strong clinical, diagnostic, and surgical skills with a variety of laboratory animal species. Completion of a residency training program in laboratory animal medicine, ACLAM board certification or eligibility, and experience working at an academic research institution are highly desirable.
