Purpose: Provide direct support to emergency response fire and rescue team under the direction of supervisors to mitigate dangerous situations. Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew.
Supervisory Role: May be assigned to lead the work of others, direct persons during evacuations of facilities or emergency situations, and provide guidance and assistance to victims of emergencies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Serves as a team member of a rescue unit, ladder truck, engine company, water tender or airport crash apparatus. Responds to fire, rescue, hazardous materials and other emergencies assigned to the Fire and Emergency Services for supporting Army operations including but not limited to camps, ammunition supply point, and Army heliport. Enters burning or contaminated structures, vehicles, and other immediately dangerous to life and health areas to fight fires and/or perform rescues while wearing required personal protective equipment. Fights structural fires alternating as hose man, ladder man, hydrant man, rescue man, nozzle man, salvage man, or hand lineman. Utilizes ladders, portable and stationary firefighting apparatus. Ventilates buildings or aircraft. Evacuates or rescues occupants. Operates powered and manual extrication tools and equipment and resuscitators. Administers first-aid and artificial respiration. Utilizes firefighting chemicals, self-contained breathing apparatus, axes, bars and other firefighting equipment.Performs administrative functions, alarm room operations or other duties as required. Maintains equipment and personal protective gear. Cleans equipment and facilities, performs routine housekeeping duties.Performs standby duties for various fire prevention activities as required. Operates computerized digital fire alarm receiving equipment including two-way radio communications equipment.Expected to maintain physical fitness as required by NFPA 1500 & 1582.Expected to maintain a neat personal appearance, grooming to military standards and professional courtesy is required when addressing officers and customers.Operates emergency response apparatus as directed.Reports to a fire company officer or lead personRequired to use and follow standing instructions and use chain of command for fire service operations and administration or routine work. Expected to have a wide degree of flexibility and latitude. Performs a variety of complicated tasks and other related tasks as directed.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education: High school diploma and graduation from a formal fire academy required. Must be certified Firefighter I, prefer certified firefighter 2. Must be able to obtain certification to DOD standard for the position of driver operator with in one year.Experience: Requires 2 years experience, with a organized fire or emergency service department. Prior military firefighting experience is preferred.Specialized knowledge: Extensive knowledge of fire and emergency services operations. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Skills: Mental alertness, mechanical aptitude, ability to get along well with others, willingness to perform any task assigned, conscientious, dependable, and in good physical condition. Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written. Must be compliant with NFPA 1582 standards for physical fitness.Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
The fire fighter will be expected to respond and work in all types of weather and in less than ideal conditions. May be required to enter hazardous atmospheres and will be expected to work in a safe manner. Must meet or exceed physical requirements contained in the current edition NFPA 1582. Physical strength and ability to perform heavy labor and strenuous work for extended periods of time under dangerous and uncomfortable conditions, often while wearing bulky protective gear, including self-continued breathing apparatus. Strenuous labor work is defined as, for example, exerting force sufficient to lift and carry up to 200 pounds of body weight and occasionally, as a team member, to lift and maneuver onto a gurney body weight up to 600 pounds, or as necessary lift whatever weight is required to handle the emergency or rescue. Often the lifting must be done in spaces where use of correct lifting techniques is not possible.
