Shell Oil Products US is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer - Rotating Equipment for its refinery in Los Angeles, California.
Responsibilities:
In this position, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive technical assurance of rotating equipment for the Production and Maintenance organizations with the objective of ensuring the integrity, reliability and sustainability of all the machinery assets. You will be responsible for developing and implementing the site's daily and long-range mechanical reliability objectives.
Key Accountabilities Include:
- Responsible for the strategy, implementation and auditing of the mechanical technical assurance programs associated with all rotating equipment ensuring that the program is documented, measurable and sustainable
- Provides the lead role in troubleshooting and authorizing mechanical shutdown recommendations of critical rotating equipment (compressors and unspared charge pumps)
- Responsible for establishing the strategy and leading the mitigation process for eliminating bad actor rotating equipment
- Reviews and authorizes maintenance/overhaul plans for the critical rotating equipment including detailed scope of work and the quality requirements
- Responsible for the technical assurance reviews of new and/or upgraded rotating equipment submitted through Area Engineers or Capital Projects
- Facilitates, leads, and/or participates in structured analysis processes, e.g., RCAs, Risk Assessments, Solution Development
- Participates as a site representative in the Rotating Equipment Technet and educates others within the local rotating equipment community of best practices, strategies, etc that are identified through Technets - Maintains knowledge of the specific technologies related to machinery, e.g., rotor dynamics, stress analysis, evaluation of load carrying limits, machine component design, and thermodynamic performance
- Interfaces with and management of vendors and/or outside consultants in acquisition of hardware or technical support
- Provides rotating equipment mentoring and training to less experienced personnel including machinery technology, maintenance applications, education of specifications and standards, field troubleshooting and general overall technical assurance requirements. Mentoring audiences include machinery skill pool and those in other skill pools that require some knowledge of machinery fundamentals, e.g., operations
- Consults with Production and Engineering management on rotating equipment programs and recommended actions
Requirements:
To be considered for this position, you must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and have approximately 7 or more years of rotating equipment field experience, including troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of hydrocarbon processing machinery. You will have approximately 3 or more years of focused experience in centrifugal and reciprocating compressor maintenance, repairs and performance management, along with strong knowledge of specifications and best practices, as well as high knowledge of API codes related to rotating equipment.
Additional Requirements Include:
- Familiarity with root-cause-analysis techniques
- Familiarity with machinery condition monitoring, including vibration analysis and beta analysis (reciprocating compressors)
- Strong knowledge in Mechanical Seals, applications and seal flush plans.
- Experience in developing strategies, programs and procedures related to rotating equipment
- Relationship building, analysis and problem solving skills

- Effective listening and presentation skills
- Excellent written communication skills
- Experience with pump and mechanical seal design, operation and maintenance
- Experience with centrifugal and reciprocating compressor design, operation and maintenance
