Position Description:
Variety.com, the award-winning daily news Web site for the entertainment industry, is looking for an online editor. The online editor would work on many aspects of the daily production of the Variety.com site.
This job would include maintaining Variety's news and reviews sections, selecting photos, building charts, updating production listings and events calendar, producing email newsletters. The ideal candidate would also have the enthusiasm and experience to help Variety.com expand its suite of blogs, podcasts and other online mediums.
The candidate must have solid editorial credentials and know the entertainment industry from a business (not consumer) perspective. The candidate clearly "gets" the Web, understanding the intricacies and differences of news publishing online versus print, and enjoys using the latest technology.
A sense of humor, strong multi-tasking and organizational skills, and the ability to learn quickly would all be considered prime assets. The position would suit someone with 2-5 years of entertainment journalism experience on the Web.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- post articles, reviews, calendar events
- categorize/rank/prioritize news stories
- write headlines effectively/quickly
- editing and deployment of newsletters
- producing, editing, and publishing stories for online use
- develop and manage blogs, podcasts and other online initiatives
- monitor proper functioning of the Variety.com web site
- developing treatment of exclusive news
- contribute to the growth and development of new and improved features of Variety.com
- Other duties include the site's advanced data tools and features, such as production and box office charts, event listings, buyers guides to film and TV markets, and our database of people, companies and film and TV projects.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- have previously worked for a frequently-updated web site
- have significant entertainment journalism experience
- working knowledge of Web standards and tools
- working knowledge of HTML, XML, Dreamweaver, ACT, Quark, Access, PhotoShop, regular expressions, the AP Style Guide
- working knowledge of audio and video production software
Position is based in Los Angeles and would report directly to the Editor of Variety.com. Hours are afternoon/evening, Sunday - Thursday.
